Originally a European certification scheme, the Caribbean was the first region (outside of South Africa) to be eligible for the Blue Flag symbol of quality and safety for beaches and marinas. As the local administrators of this programme, the Marine Park assisted Doctor’s Cave Beach in meeting the Blue Flag criteria, which included environmental awareness programmes, facility standards for beach goers, safety precautions and maintenance of water quality standards.

In addition to placing a Marine Park sign near the beach entrance which provided information about the importance of healthy coral reefs, the Trust also provided staff training courses in marine ecology for the staff operating on the beach. The purpose of the training was to bring attention to the importance of marine ecosystems and hence encourage proper behaviour by beach goers and staff alike.
