In an effort to reduce solid waste inputs into the Park, the Marine Park Trust implemented a year-long project funded by the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica.
A Solid Waste Seminar was held in April 2004 to find “Solutions Through Partnership” to this growing threat. A working group called the SWAT (Solid Waste Action Team) was formed out of this conference and has since been involved in lobbying and educational efforts. The Trust sensitized schools to the problem of solid waste by giving presentations and providing garbage drums and compost bins. Newspaper articles, Happy Hour Presentations and events such as International Coastal Cleanup Day also helped to spread the message to the wider public.
